Движение, выросшее из движения за права женщин [ women's lib], движения за гражданские права [ civil rights movement] и "сексуальной революции". Впервые понятие "политическая активность геев" [gay activism], вошло в общественную жизнь страны после т.н. "стоунуоллских бунтов" [Stonewall Inn Riots] в июне 1969, когда их группы оказали сопротивление полиции у гей-бара на Кристофер-стрит [ Christopher Street] г. Нью-Йорке. В 1970-72 число организаций гомосексуалистов в США резко выросло. Целью большинства этих организаций была борьба за принятие законодательства, охраняющего гражданские права гомосексуалистов. В 1972-78 более 30 законодательных собраний штатов приняли законы о гражданских правах гомосексуалистов, хотя некоторые из них были позднее отменены референдумами; более 20 штатов отменили законы о наказании за содомию. В 1973 Американская психиатрическая ассоциация [American Psychiatric Association] исключила гомосексуализм из списка психических отклонений. Гомосексуалисты начали избираться в органы власти различного уровня, включая Палату представителей. Проблема СПИДа [ AIDS] расширила рамки движения. На выборах 1993 президент Клинтон [ Clinton, William Jefferson (Bill)] обещал содействовать принятию закона о защите гомосексуалистов от дискриминации в вооруженных силах. Имея значительные традиции, получило новый импульс в 1960-е гг. Выдвигает требования смягчения законодательства по абортам, равной оплаты за равный труд, организации финансируемых из общественных средств центров по уходу за детьми.
